Into the Garden

Went out into the garden early this morning for inspiration for the painting challenge today. After fertilizing the herbs and noticing they all need watering (will be heading out in a bit to do that) I saw these pail yellow beauties. So they became my subject for a 9x11 oil painting. Still stuck at home without a car, this is helping me to stay focused on the painting.

Enjoying the Glimpse of Spring

I love March down South. The days are getting longer, flowers are starting to pop up all over the yard, (even though some are weeds), and seeds can be planted in flats. I go about trying to uncover my gardens and planning to plant far too much for me ever to take care of.  But I love the smells herbs can bring and I love how they can change an ordinary dish into something spectacular. I love growing flowers that can also be used for medicine. The coming of Spring is a magical time.   I forgot where I purchased it, but sometime in the winter I saw this garden stool. Anyone who has weeded knows that the back can only take so many hours of weeding.  This week I took this collapsible stool out of its box and gave it a try. Perfect! Weeding can be therapeutic if one is comfortable. There is a sense of accomplishment when the garden is exposed after being covered by weeds all winter. Winter Planning for that Spring Garden

When you live down South, winter is a busy time for gardeners. After the busyness of the Holidays have past the seed catalogs start rolling in. I pile them up on my desk and try to get to them before all the specials expire. Gurneys and Gardens Alive always have 50% off sales and even free shipping. So, if I am ordering seeds, fertilizers and supplies, I spend a week about now trying to figure out what may be on my wish list.  This year, after seeing my sister's success with potatoes, I want to give them a try again. Gurneys has some wonderful upright containers to put them in to save space. There is also the lettuce, chard, kale and spinach seeds to order, along with some chile peppers and tomatoes.
