A Bit of Fall Color

The weather here in Louisiana has been perfect for putting in a few flowers for fall and winter color. These flowers will even last well into May. The summer months are so miserable that gardening becomes a chore, but the fall? Well, these months are made for gardening. Besides flowers you can grow lettuce, tomatoes, brocoli, cabbage, and all kinds of herbs. We here down South love our fall gardens.





 




May favorite flower to grow during this time is the viola. Not only will it flower and flower for fall, winter and spring, it smells heavenly too. We have all but bread all the smell out of most flower, but not this little beauty! They now come in all kinds of colors, from bright yellow,lavenders, purples and oranges.

Doesn't this cute little pot with yellow flowers make the cutest patio table topper? I fill all kinds of pots with these flowers and distribute them around my back patio and front garden. This year I even planted a whole row of them in my front garden instead of pansies. For some reason, pansies don't do well for me. They always seem a bit leggy and I get few blooms, so I will give these high producing plants a try this year. Of course in the back row of the garden I plan snap dragons for my tall row of color. They will bloom once in the fall and again in the spring.

Tea Time. A relaxing time. A time where, during the day, you can take a breath and regroup. Today,I was forced to stay home because my son James is working on his car and needed to go to work. I spent the morning doing a load of clothes, started a loaf of bread, harvested several bunches of peppermint, and dried lots of sage. For dinner I went out into the garden and picked lots of thyme to make a lemon/thyme roasted chicken with heritage carrots.  And as the chicken was cooking I decided to put together several tea recipes that have muddled around in my brain. I will look around on the internet for ingredients in the various teas out there, wrote them down and then tried to combine these ingredients in a pleasing way. Getting into Trees

The Right Path In my watercolor class, hosted by a very talented man in the UK, we are beginning our adventure with trees: how to paint them organically, how to make them convincingly real by the use of shadow, how to paint the layer of branches...trees, to me, are as hard to paint as the human form in all their complexity. I am looking forward to the challenge...and I am off to paint more trees! This scene is from one of my favorite places: the Smoky Mountains in Cades Cove. Suffice to say, there will be many more paintings coming from this area!

Dreaming of Spring

Dreaming Of Spring We have had an unusual amount of sleet, snow, and freezing rain this year in Louisiana. I am afraid to go visit what is left of my herb garden. With no greenhouse to protect my plants, and honestly we hardly need it down here in the deep South, I am not sure what will be left come spring. One can dream though, and when one is stuck in the house (all the roads, bridges and highways are shut down)one is left to create. So I have been painting and knitting this last week...and dreaming of Spring flowers to come. Hey, this weekend will be above 70 degrees! A girl can dream a little with those temperatures on the horizon.
